OUR CHAPTER AT MIT

History

The Massachusetts Gamma Chapter of Pi Beta Phi is one of seven Panhellenic sororities at MIT. We were chartered in the fall of 2008, and have initiated over 14 new member classes since then. We currently have 100 sisters, with 50 residing in our house located on campus. We gained residence in the fall of 2011, and the first sisters moved in in the fall of 2012.

Community

When we're not busy, we love to hang out together! Some of our favorite activities include watching movies, baking, Disney singalongs, grabbing dinner in Boston, or relaxing in the lounges. No matter where we are, Pi Phis love to spend time together. We host weekly sisterhood events and mixers with other groups on campus in addition to a formal event every semester (aka PHormal), ranging from game shows to dance parties.

Impact

Our chapter is committed to the philanthropic efforts of the fraternity, promoting literacy in any way we can. Arrowspike is our annual volleyball tournament, bringing the MIT community together to raise money for FirstBook and the Pi Beta Phi Foundation. We also organize smaller events such as Lollipops for Literacy, Wing Ching, Ransom for Reading, and Fraternity Day of Service. Sisters are committed to service and philanthropic work outside of the fraternity as well. Pi Phi participates in Relay For Life at MIT, the Boston Marathon and supports other organizations by participating in their philanthropy events throughout the year.

OUR HOUSE

Our chapter has a house (the PHouse!) located on campus. It is home to 52 of our sisters, with 3 doubles and 7 singles on each floor (12 doubles and 28 singles total). Each floor also includes a bathroom with two showers and two toilet stalls, with private bathrooms on the first floor and the basement. Our first floor features a kitchen that all sisters can use and a gorgeous living room with ceiling to floor windows facing the Charles River.
PiPhis hang out and study together on the first floor and upper floor lounges, and we love to host sisterhood events in the phouse!
Other amenities include two washing machines and two dryers in the basement (this is the same ratio of people to washing machines in most other MIT dorms).

FAQs:

What if I need a quiet space to study in?
Our basement is furnished with tables and chairs and intended specifically for studying, and we also have a private study room downstairs with a whiteboard and a conference table. Furthermore, the fifth floor is designated as the quiet floor.

How much does it cost to live in the Pi Phi house?
The Pi Phi house costs the same as a tier two dorm.

Will I still be on the dining plan?
Yes, because the Pi Phi house only has one kitchen, members must remain on the dining plan (minimum block 60). However, because of our convenient, on-campus location, it's easy to access the different dining halls. Furthermore, every Tuesday and Thursday night we get dinner delivered to the house and every Sunday morning we get a delicious Sunday brunch delivered so that we can all eat together in our beautiful house!

If we're on campus, does that mean we're an MIT dorm?
No, even though we are on campus and MIT is leasing us our house, we are still considered to be in a separate category from dorms. We get the luxury of having MIT staff come clean our bathrooms and kitchen but we are technically considered "off-campus" even though we're closer to academic buildings than many undergraduate dorms! The rules and policies you will abide by when living in the house are set and enforced by both MIT and Pi Beta Phi.
